Facts about Luigi Di Savoia

Mount Luigi di Savoia is one of the Mountains that make up the Rwenzori Mountains which is found in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park in Uganda and its managed by Uganda Wildlife Authority.  If you’re planning Rwenzori Mountaineering tours to summit, it stands at a height of 4637 feet hence being the fourth highest in Uganda and the sixth highest in Africa.

Mount Luigi is the only mountain that the Duke of Abruzzi did not attempt to climb, despite the fact that he named it with the unique Name that has been recognized in the Uganda tourism and its the lovely juice for mountaineers in Uganda.

Itinerary

You will head to the park head office for briefing and orientation about Rwenzori Central Circuit, the oldest trail in the Rwenzori Mountains that are used by Duke the Abruzzi for summit to Weismann peak on Mount Luigi Di Savoia. We recommend spending the night at the hotels close to park offices like Ruboni community Camp, Rwenzori base Camp, and Rwenzori Trekkers Hostel.

Your trek departs from Nyakalengija at approximately 9:00-9:30 am, meet with your hiker guide, porters for your 6 days Rwenzori trek to Weismann peak, before setting off on foot to Rwenzori Mountains National Park’s Main gate, to begin with your central circuit trekking adventure.

Today’s walk is approximately 8km, which may take about 5-7 hours to reach the first hut of Nyabitaba at 2651m.


After an early morning breakfast, you will follow the trail from Nyabitaba to John Matte, Cross over Kurt Schuffer, lying between Bujuku and Mubuku river, after which you will continue trekking over slippery moss covered and steep rocks a alongside bamboo mixed with montane forest.

 

The forest contains various bird species that you may spot as you trek through the forest, continuing up to Nyamileju rock shelter, where you will have your lunch break. Enjoy remarkable views of mount Stanley and Mount Speke (only on a clear day). Proceed to john Matte hut through the alpine forest, arriving at the hut in the afternoon for dinner, next day’s briefing and an overnight stay.


On this day, you will have a long day trek passed Bujuku hut to Kitandara hut, which may take about 9-12 hours’ trek to Kitandara hut.

You will start with the 6km hike to Bujuku at 3962m, by crossing the Bujuku River and then slope down to the bigo bog, where you will be amazed by the remarkable views of peaks including Mount Stanley to the west, Mount Baker to the south and Speke to the North. Proceed with your trek via Lake Bujuku where the attractive Alpine savannah vegetation begins. Arrive at Bujuku Hut for a lunch break, after which you will proceed to Kitandara hut.

Hike via the upper bigo bog, and continue through the steep slopes of Lake Bujuku to the West as you ascend to the 4372m Scott-Elliot pass.

Proceed through various bogs as well as the beautiful ground gully. Walk through the steep sections above the gully by using a metal ladder reaching a junction with two divided trails, whereby the right trail heads to the Elena Hut, while you will follow the left trail to the Scott-Eliiot pass as you descend to Kitandara hut. Arrive at Kitandara hut in the evening for dinner and an overnight sleep.


As it’s known that the ultimate goal on 6 Days Weismann peak hike is the summit to Mount Luigi Di Savoia, you will face the challenge on this day and summit to Weisman’s Peak trail, far more challenging than any of the other major Rwenzori trek - especially when it rains, you will set off at 4:00am following muddy and steep rocky trails to the summit, though there is a lot of scrambling.

You will be allowed to have your lunch break as you enjoy the spectacular views of the Peaks surrounding. You will then slope back to Kitandara hut for reaching in the evening for dinner and an overnight sleep. 


After an early morning breakfast, spend your entire 6-8 hours’ trekking along the base of Mount Baker which is quite slippery. Ascend steeply up the head wall that spreads from the base of Mount Baker, as you proceed towards the southern side of Mountain Rwenzori to the Fresh field pass. Continue with the long stretch of the muddy trail, trekking through the Kabamba, Akhendahi and rock shelters of Bujongolo- the base camp for the historic expeditions by Duke of Abruzzi in 1906.

Proceed with your trek along the Kabamba trail and later arrive at Guy Yeoman, which is established at the banks of river Mubuku. Dinner and overnight at the Guy Yeoman hut.


On this last day of your 6 days Rwenzori hike; you will descend to Nyabitaba hut, after your early morning breakfast passing through the Bamboo forest.

 

You enjoy great sightings of beautiful flowers and plants, bamboo forests and Kinchuchu and Mubuku Rivers, not forgetting the Kabamba falls. Arrive at Nyabitaba hut after a 4 hours’ trek, after which you will briefly spend 40 minutes visiting Lake Mahoma.

Return to the hut after after Lake Mahoma exploration and embark on your trek to Nyakalengijja where you will meet your guide to transfer you back to your hotel.
