About This Destination

The Rwenzori, also known as the "Mountains of the Moon," are a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The range is home to diverse ecosystems, from tropical rainforests to alpine meadows, making it an excellent destination for birdwatching.The Rwenzori Mountains are home to over 200 bird species, some of which are endemic to the region. These birds are found in a variety of habitats, including montane forests, bamboo zones, and alpine meadows. Notable species include:

-Rwenzori Turaco  (Tauraco johnstoni) – A striking bird with vibrant green and purple plumage, it is endemic to the Rwenzori Mountains.
-Rwenzori Batis (Batis diops) – A small and elusive bird found in the bamboo zone.
-Purple-headed Starling (Lamprotornis purpureiceps) – A beautiful, iridescent bird seen in the lower forested slopes.
-African Green Broadbill (Pseudocalyptomena graueri) – A rare and elusive species found in the montane forests.
-Giant Forest Hog and Mountain Buzzard can also be spotted in the area.

Itinerary

Upon arrival at Entebbe international Airport, you will be picked up by Discovery Tours Safari guide who will transfer you to lodge of your choice in Kasese. The drive from Kampala to Kasese town takes 7 hours drive, where you will enjoy the overnight stay awaits for the unique Rwenzori Mountaineering via Mahoma loop hike.

You will check out of the lodge in Kasese and proceed to the headquarters of Rwenzori mountains national park – Nyakalengijja. You will be briefed about the hike and more information concerning different attractions in the park like vegetation, bird species, water sources like rivers and others will be narrated to you. After the briefing, you start the hike through the breathtaking vegetation of bamboo forests, lush forests as you cross different rivers like River Mubuku.

Dinner and overnight at Omuka Kiiza Camp

Wake up for your tasty breakfast at the camp as you prepare for your transfer to Lake Mahoma. The lake features bamboo and heather vegetation zones and during the trek, you will walk through the footmarks  

of the elephants. As you continue with the hike, you will be able to sight amazing everlasting flowers, the giant lobelia and many others.

Dinner and overnight at Lake Mahoma Camp

From Lake Mahoma, you will take different photographs of the lakes and later set off to Nyabitaba Camp for your breakfast. After, you will move through the Rwenzori Central Circuit trail to the starting point of the mountain – Nyakalengijja gate. You will descend through the heather and bamboo forests and then in Mubuku valley up to the park gate where you will meet your safari guide for your transfer to the lodge/hotel of your own for dinner and overnight.

In the morning after breakfast, you will set off from the hotel in Kasese to Bwindi Impenetrable national park for gorilla trekking experience the next day. The park is known for hosting almost half of the world’s mountains gorillas in its four sectors of Buhoma, Nkuringo, Rushaga and Ruhija sectors.

Have a delicious breakfast at the lodge and drive to the park headquarters for briefing by the ranger guides about the rules and regulations to be followed during the gorilla trekking experience. Every group  

will be allocated to the gorilla family to trek and once traced, they will be allowed to spend 1 hour as they watch them and also take some pictures of these gentle apes. After the experience, the trekkers will be awarded a certificate for the recognition. Return back to the Lodge for Dinner and Overnight

Wake up for your breakfast at the lodge and later make a transfer to Kampala for your departure flight. During this transfer, expect to have a stopover in Mbarara for lunch and at the Equator in Kayabwe for photography. Later you will continue with the drive to Entebbe international airport for your flight.
